‘FLORA’ & ‘AGRI-TECH’







    The Department of Biotechnology organised two intra-departmental competitions titled FLORA & AGRI-
    TECH on 17th December under the leadership of Ms Jenica Rangel and Ms Vrunda Raiker. They were held in

    the lobby area, Block C, St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa –Goa. A total of 39 students participated.


    The plant exhibition cum competition titled ‘FLORA’ was a group competition based on the theme ‘Plants in
    our day to day lives’ wherein students had to pick any one criteria and present any four plants under it. This
    competition was held to bring awareness about the significance of plants around us & familiarise students with
    the  taxonomic  background  of  plants.  The  judges  for  the  competition  were  Dr.  Andrew  D’Souza,  Assistant
    Professor  -  Department  of  Chemistry  &  Ms.  Maria  Beatriz  D’Souza,  Associate  Professor  -  Department  of
    Botany. The students exhibited medicinal plants, insect repellent plants, flowering plants with medicinal values,
    common garden plants having hidden medicinal values & traditional medicinal plants.


    The  second  competition,  ‘AGRI-TECH’,  was  an  agricultural  model  making  competition  on  the  theme
    “Technology  innovations  in  Agriculture”  to  help  understand  the  need  of  using  modern  technology  &
    innovative approach to increase productivity & raise profitability. The students exhibited working models based
    on aquaponics, hydroponics, solar drip irrigation, vertical gardening, aeroponics & GM seeds. The judges for

    the competition were Dr. Suraksha Dongrekar, Assistant Professor - Department of Botany & Mr. Siddhesh
    Menon, Assistant Professor - Department of Microbiology. The students explained the working of the exhibits
    to the visitors of the exhibition.
