As I sit to write these few words to our young collegians, I suddenly remembered that it is 12 th August
and a day celebrated as World Youth Day, established by the UN in 1999 with the first youth day
celebrated on Aug 12, 2000. The purpose of this day is to recognise the contribution of the youth towards
making the world a better place for all. In keeping with this aim, the theme for this year’s Youth Day is,

‘Intergenerational solidarity creating a world for all ages.

The world is a home to all humans, animals, birds, trees, fishes, the water, the mountains, for all. It is
only when all live in harmony with each other, especially when humans treat every other human being,

and the rest of God’s creation with due respect, that the goals of sustainable development can be
achieved. This year’s theme speaks about ‘Intergenerational solidarity creating a world for all ages’ with
stress on the ‘ageism’ factor. Ageism is kind of bias with which people of different ages are treated, for
example, an old person may be seen as useless, or a youngster may be looked upon with disdain. The

theme tries to remind all that it is only when we live in solidarity with each other, recognising the worth
of every person, without factoring in the age, that we can ensure a better world for all. As I say this, it
needs no mention that education plays a great role in creating this solidarity.

In this College, we offer different courses of study to our youngsters. Though every course has its own
importance, here I would like to make especial mention of two courses, namely, Bachelor in Computer
Application, and Bachelor in Biotechnology. Both these subjects have a standing of their own. While
computers have cut short the distances and have brought peoples together, Biotechnology has, through

research, shown how people’s lives can be made serene and cheerful. Its contribution in the field of
developing of new food crops, thus ensuring increase in food production, and the medical research,
which for example, gave us a vaccine against coronavirus in a short span of time, only shows the
immense potentiality that this subject has, a few caveats notwithstanding. I hope that the students of

these two subjects will make the most of it and succeed in life.

I thank the Youth for the joy they bring into our lives, and pray that the bubbly Youth studying in this St.
Xavier’s College, will recognise the great role they have to, and can play, in binding peoples together in

solidarity, and themselves live in solidarity with each other on this campus. May God bless every
student, every member of the teaching faculty, and other staff members of our revered institution.
