The Post Graduate Dept. of Chemistry at St. Xavier’s College was established in 2008. The aim of the dept. is to create a nurturing environment that supports student’s learning and research. The department is affiliated to the Goa University, and offers a self-financed M.Sc. degree in Physical Chemistry. Our department has qualified and experienced faculty and well furnished laboratories. The instrumentation laboratory houses sophisticated instruments like FTIR, HPLC, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, GC, Cyclic voltameter, TG-DTA, Flame Photometer etc. to enable the students to perform practicals and assist in the learning process. The college has also procured an XRD instrument The use of these instruments is extended to students from other colleges in Goa as well as to those involved in research. LCD projectors are installed in all the classrooms and computer and internet facilities are provided to the students. Besides this, there is also departmental library with subscriptions to various periodicals and journals.

Looking back at my time in the PG Physical Chemistry department (Batch of 2014) at St. Xavier’s, one thing that always stands out is how quickly life moved. I actually started my first job within a week of completing my final exams which I think says a lot about how well this department prepares us to get out there and work. My path eventually led me away from the corporate world and into public service as a Police Sub Inspector. It might seem like a total 180o turn, but I still think like a chemist every day. The logic, the focus on evidence, and the need for precision I learned in the lab are the same tools I use now on the job.

I’m so grateful to the department for shaping my confidence and values, and I encourage students to explore diverse career paths with the strength of their scientific foundation.

NILAM S. NAIK Alumnus,

P.G Department of Physical Chemistry

St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa (Batch of 2014)

Just after completing my Bachelor’s degree from the same college, the PG Department announced its course, and joining it felt like coming home. As part of the very first batch, we were essentially the department’s first batch and thankfully, it turned out to be a great success. Fifteen years later, I’m grateful we trusted the course structure, the vision, and most importantly, the faculty who guided us with patience, passion, and encouragement. Those two years were truly the most enriching, filled with knowledge, meaningful experiences, and lasting friendships. I remain deeply thankful to the PG Department for shaping my subject knowledge and helping me grow into a confident Chemistry teacher.

Ms. PRIYANKA VINOD VAIGANKAR

PURUSHOTTOM WALAWALKAR HSS, MAPUSA (Batch 2008-2010)

Looking back to 2018, joining the PG Physical Chemistry program at St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa marked the beginning of an enriching journey of independence and self-discovery. As part of the first all-girls batch, our department fostered a supportive and empowering environment, guided by dedicated faculty like Miss Rupali Neje, HOD Miss Mamata Prabhugaonkar, and Miss Kalpita Talpekar. The department not only strengthened my academic foundation but also encouraged overall development through events like CHEMSCOPE 2K19 and extracurricular achievements. Graduating with distinction in Physical Chemistry, I owe my growth and confidence to the department’s constant guidance and nurturing atmosphere, and I remain proud to carry forward its values as a Chemistry teacher today.

My academic journey at St. Xavier’s, especially during my Master’s in Physical Chemistry, was a transformative experience marked by strong faculty guidance and a collaborative learning environment that fostered both personal and professional growth. The department’s holistic approach to education built a solid foundation that has been instrumental in my Ph.D. journey at Kongju National University, South Korea, where I work on chemical sensing using SERS substrates. I carry forward the values of curiosity, perseverance, and scientific rigor instilled during my time at St. Xavier’s, and I remain deeply grateful to the teaching and non-teaching staff for their constant support and mentorship, which played a crucial role in shaping my academic path.
