To make students aware of the rich heritage of Marathi language and literature.
Mission:
To create interest in young minds for learning Marathi language and literature and build overall confidence among them, enhancing their way of thinking to live creative lives.
Department of Marathi of St. Xavier’s College was started in 1965. It is headed by Dr. Vrunda Kelkar. The Department has achieved many milestones, it has brought glory to the College by winning a number of awards. The department creates dynamic learning environment where students can explore their ideas and creativity.
Department of Marathi regularly organizes a wide range of activities including seminars, workshops, interactive sessions, and a number of competitions. Every year it celebrates Marathi language day to commemorate Dnyanpeeth Award winning writer Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar. Special emphasis is placed on developing students writing skills by conducting essays and poetry writing competitions. Such initiatives contribute to the overall development of students.
The faculty undertakes career guidance, helping the students to choose the right profession. Students of Marathi can opt for employment in the fields of teaching, journalism, translation, etc.
Communication Skill is essential skill in Arts programme because it connects every part of our life. An Arts programme often includes multiple performances such as music, dance, drama or poetry and without a good compere these segments can get disconnected or confusing. That’s why Marathi subject offers Compering course to enhance their skill.

Pursuing a B.A. in Marathi at Xavier’s College has truly been one of the best decisions of my life. The College offers a dynamic and engaging learning environment, where not only academic excellence is prioritized, but also personal growth. The faculty members are highly knowledgeable and supportive, fostering a classroom atmosphere that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed, providing a solid foundation in Marathi literature and language while also integrating modern perspectives. Moreover, the College’s vibrant campus life and extracurricular activities have allowed me to explore my interests beyond academics. St. Xavier’s has shaped me into a accomplished individual. I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have come my way throughout this journey.
